4 Things you Should know about Fibroids

Fibroids are common. You may hear the word “tumor” used to describe your fibroids. The word tumor to most of us sounds really scary – but don’t be scared. The chance that your fibroid is a cancerous growth is less than 1%.

But when it comes to pregnancy and your fertility, this is what you should know:

1. If your fibroid is greater than 5cm in size – consider removing it.

2. If your fibroid is pushing on the inside of your uterus (the cavity) and causing you to have bad periods – consider removing it.

Pelvic Ultrasound

If you have been trying to get pregnant and haven’t been able to, it’s time to have a pelvic ultrasound. Information gained during a pelvic ultrasound could tell you what the problem may be. The uterus is a pear-shaped organ that sits on top of the vagina. Embryos attach to the inside (also known as the cavity) of the uterus and grow. A pelvic ultrasound may tell you if you have a growth inside your cavity that is affecting the ability of a pregnancy to either attach and/or grow.
