Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a component of your own blood that is specially prepared by separating the components of a blood draw through centrifugation. This process results in a high concentration of platelets, which are rich in growth factors. These growth factors can stimulate the body’s natural healing and cell rejuvenation processes.
When used in the context of ovarian rejuvenation, PRP involves injecting this concentrated plasma directly into the ovaries under ultrasound guidance, typically while the patient is under sedation. The procedure is similar to an egg retrieval process.
The growth factors in PRP can promote the development of new blood vessels and stimulate stem cells to grow and regenerate in the targeted area. This can lead to improved ovarian function, which may increase the chances of obtaining healthy eggs and achieving a successful pregnancy.
PRP has been used in other fields such as dermatology and orthopedics since the 1970s for its regenerative properties. In women’s health, particularly in reproductive endocrinology, PRP is viewed as a promising treatment for women with diminished ovarian reserve or primary ovarian insufficiency, potentially offering an alternative before considering more invasive options like egg donation.
