- Know your insurance benefits prior to making any appointments with your infertility doctor. The reason is this – the infertility doctor you choose may not be contracted with your insurance company. Knowing the details about your insurance coverage will prevent the following scenario: your infertility doctor orders blood tests but is not contracted with your insurance company. You go to the lab and have the labwork drawn only to get a bill for $1500 because your insurance tells you that they won’t cover the lab work because the provider is not contracted with your insurance. That’s not the kind of surprise you want. Knowing this ahead of time would then give you the time to talk to your OBGyn about ordering the bloodwork for you. Your infertility doc may be contracted with your insurance company but if you don’t have coverage for infertility evaluation, you still may get stuck with the bill. So take the type to understand your benefits before making any trips to the infertility doctor.
- Have all your medical records with you at your first appointment. Did you get a semen analysis done a year ago at one clinic, a hysterosalpingogram at another clinic and lab work done somewhere else? Take the time to get all the information together. It will save you money to have everything with you at your first appointment. Don’t assume that your records will get to your infertility doctor’s office. Have paper copies for yourself so that if records don’t make it where they need to, you can always provide your own records to be reviewed.
- Shop around and talk to all infertility clinics in your area. The price for treatment will vary from clinic to clinic in your area. If one clinic is offering something that you like but you don’t necessarily like that clinic – tell the clinic that you’d rather go to about the plan that you thought worked for you and see if they will extend the same financial plan to you.
- Medications are expensive. You can also save money by sending your fertility medication prescription to several pharmacies. Fertility pharmacies will match prices of medications to keep your business. Get price quotes from several pharmacies. Ask your doc for the names of the pharmacies.
